Got rid of my old (new) JK for a new (old) TJ.
Now that you’re entirely confused, allow me to explain. I love my JK. It’s been a great truck. Literally nothing wrong with it. But, it’s a $500 a month car payment on something I take off road and abuse the crap out of. So I sold it, the equity I had in it paid for the TJ in its entirety (jeep, tax, registration, etc) and even put a few bucks back in my pocket. Plus, I now have $500 a month plus what I am saving annually on insurance and registration to put towards jeep parts / more vehicles.
So yeah. It's not a perfect Jeep, but it's a solid starting point.

Base model was a 2.5L OHV I4 until 2002, then it was the 2.4L DOHC after.

Great decision, I’m a huge fan of the TJ. I don’t dislike the JK, but I feel the Wrangler peaked with TJ.
Damn I really miss my old CJ-7 now....brb checking craigslist

All of the TJ Sports were 4.0.

The 4.0 I6 is nice and torquey and extremely hard to kill (though it does throw oil out of the breather valve non-stop). I’ve had three XJs (two pre- HO) versions and they all made it past 220K miles before I sold them.
Somehow I never owned a TJ, but at least twice a month find myself looking for the LWB Unlimited versions on eBay. I think of them as new school Scramblers.

Turns out we were both right. The TJ “Sport” models all had 4.0L engines.

I love Wranglers, if only I could afford the gas.

That’s probably a good move, don’t really want a monthly payment on something that you’re probably going to break at some point.

I read “Jeep tax” and figured it was the same as “drift tax” on 240’s.
